History
Demir Hisar (native: Демир Хисар) is a town in south-western part of Republic of Macedonia. It is the seat of Demir Hisar Municipality. The name of the town translates to "Iron Castle" in Turkish, and dates back to the time when Macedonia was ruled by the Ottoman Empire.
The settlement is situated along the main road between the important Macedonian cities of Bitola and Kichevo.
According to the last National census from 2002 this municipality has 9,497 inhabitants (9.179 Macedonians, 318 Albanians).
