History
Probishtip (native: Пробиштип) is a town in the Republic of Macedonia, and seat of Probishtip Municipality.
By the 2003 territorial division of Macedonia, the rural Zletovo municipality was attached to Probishtip municipality. The present municipality has 16.193 inhabitants.
Probishtip is nestled in the southwest corner of the Osogovo Mountains, in northeastern Macedonia. The region has been well-known since Roman times for its mineral wealth and mining industry.
Probishtip is close to both the stunning Monastery of Gabriel Lesnovski (dedicated to St. Archangel Michael and St. Gavril Lesnovski) and the unearthly stone formations of Kuklica. The mines of Zletovo give most of the natural materials that are processed in Probishtip.
